Problem with compound microscope. Help?

I'm wondering since the laboratory compound microscope has both the objective as well as the eyepiece as two biconvex lenses and the image formed by them is real and inverted, how is it that we see the object under the microscope as virtual and erect? Does our eye work like a third lens or is the image real and inverted? Please help...
